Limits to Growth.
Potomac Associates 1972. ISBN 0 85644 008 6
This seminal publication from a multinational think tank projected the likely use of the World's resources to the end of the 20th. Century found that much of the growth was exponential and unsustainable. Whilst it was events during the Yom Kippur War that motivated the Arab members of OPEC it was the reading of this book that gave them the clue that flow of oil as a finite resource had not only to be controlled but could be used as a bargaining lever. The acted buy quadrupling the oil price over night. The Prime Minister responded with the three day week and we were advised by the Energy Minister of the day to brush our teeth in the dark. This may not have been the first time that emnergy awareness had been heightened but it did mark a new beginning for the subject. It was as if Limits to Growth was uniquely responsible for the study of Futurology and it was noted that to predict the future was likely to lead to affecting it. However whilst it only took a matter of months before the Arab States acted upon the book's conclusions it took the West some further 35 years. Talk of global warming as a result of the build up of Carbon Dioxide is everywhere in 2007 but reference to the graph on page 72 shows the prediction that the concentration of the gas in our atmosphere was likely to grow from some 322 parts per million at Mauna Loa, Hawaii in 1972 to 380 ppm in 2000. The concentration actually reached was 369.7 ppm. Whilst that the growth was not obviously exponential it was close to the level that had been predicted.

Came into effect April 6th 2006 published by Communites and Local Government but no longer available from Government but from a private organisation called Logicworks.
This sets out the standards for all new housing with regard to measures to limit the use of energy. This is a minimum standard. Government and the scientific consensus is that designers should reach beyond this minimum standard towards designing homes that would have a zero impact on climate change.

Silent Spring
Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd 1962
Strictly speaking this book is not concerned with climate change but with the effect of polution on fauna. However it was a seminal work that served to broaden the concern of a generation that had previously been more focused upon the threat posed by the super powers through their pursuit of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Chapman, Peter.
Fuel's Paradise
Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd 1975
This book introduces a crucial concept. We account for everything in monetary terms whilst if our concern is with energy then we should do some accounting in energy terms. How long will we have to wait before we can go each year to inspect our local council's energy accounts?
A quote from the book:
"You can fuel all the people some of the time and
You can fuel some of the people all the time but
You cannot fuel all the people all of the time."
Foley, Gerald.
The Energy Question
Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd (28 May 1992) ISBN-10: 0140156836 ISBN-13: 978-0140156836
This survey of our energy needs and resources considers them all from a technical, an environmental and even a political perspective. The revised fourth edition lays particular emphasis on the issues of today: the prospects for nuclear energy after Chernobyl, the availability of oil supplies and the role of renewable resources. A new chapter covers global warming and the threat to the ozone layer.
. Lovins, Amory B.
Thermal Limits to World Energy Use.
As revised for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists; first published 1970
Sets out the case against looking for alternative sources of energy beyond solar as anything including nuclear will increase global warming as can be evidenced from the heat islands experienced at cities.
